Ms. Jana Corrigan received her associate degree in Art and Humanities from Coast Community College in 2020 and in addition received private art instruction for six years. During this time, she enjoyed volunteer and teacher roles for various ministries. As a graduated homeschool student, she has a passion for teaching art alongside academic subjects such as science and history in the homeschool community where her students and families have appreciated her artistic skills and her ability to encourage and instruct students of all ages in art theory. Besides teaching for HSFM, she also works as an assistant to artist Cathy Clark and together they recently illustrated and published a children’s picture book. Ms. Corrigan’s talent continues to flourish while creating her own paintings and designs, and as she trains young artists at HSFM. We are very grateful that the Lord has provided a teacher who not only has years of private training and college coursework, but also is knowledgeable and experienced in providing instruction in art theory while incorporating science and history lessons.

Art w/Science - G1-3Students have the opportunity to combine Art with Science as a multisensory approach to learning science and as a means for integrating school work while enjoying art. Students can also take this class as an Art-only elective. The art projects completed in class will reflect and enrich the weekly science lessons. Throughout the course, students will compile an art syllabus with instructional inserts and worksheets that explain and illustrate the elements of art being implemented with each project, such as shape, form, line, color, edges, space, & texture, and more. Young artists will enjoy a variety of art mediums which may include colored pencil, water color crayons, and oil pastels. The weekly science homework will include reading assignments from G1-3 AIG Adventures in the Physical World. Learning and enjoying art throughout childhood can help improve motor skills and visual learning, and can also benefit children in their overall academic performance and innovation. Parents and children are pleasantly surprised to see what little hands can produce with encouragement and instruction. The Art w/Science courses can be repeated multiple years as various science texts and art lessons rotate from year to year.

Mrs. Danielle Melendes received her BA in child development and family studies from CSULB in 2007 and received her multiple subject teaching credential shortly after. She co-taught as a General Ed teacher for 3 years with a Special ED teacher in a blended PreK classroom. As a State Preschool Teacher for Newport-Mesa she worked her way up to Site Supervisor, facilitating the program and supervising other teachers and assistants. Later she was a substitute teacher for Huntington Beach City School District before taking time off to be with her family and start her homeschool journey. She and her husband, Robert, have been active in church ministry, helping in both children’s and youth ministries and church camps. She has been serving and teaching in women’s ministry, facilitating moms Bible studies with childcare, and also serving in VBS. As a homeschool mother of school age daughters, she has been a leader in her church community in planning and facilitating classes, co-op activities, field trips, nature days, prayer, and encouragement, all with a desire to support and encourage others also in their homeschool journeys. As a qualified teacher, dedicated and passionate homeschool parent, Mrs. Melendes is excited to teach other elementary children in the classroom to help them enjoy and appreciate God’s wonderful creation using the Answers in Genesis “God’s Design for Science” series.

AIG Physical World - G4-6For students G4-6 this year, HSFM is offering Physical World in the Answers in Genesis series, “God’s Design for Science”. Students receive lively class presentations and participate in hands-on experiments and activities that bring science to life. The AIG curriculum includes labs, worksheets, answering “What Did We Learn” questions, and quizzes that are designed to accommodate multiple grades. Class activities reinforce and enhance the weekly topics being studied at home. Topics include the study of the mechanical forces, simple machines, laws of motion, potential and kinetic energy, and forms of energy. The Physical World reveals the wonders of God’s creation through the study of physics and the mechanisms of heat, machines, and technology. HSFM’s science classes for G4-6 rotate over a 3-year period: Chemistry & Ecology, Physical World, Heaven & Earth (2023-24). Completing any number of these titles will provide a Biblically-centered science foundation, and help to prepare students for junior high and high school level science courses. (Life Science is the 4th in the AIG series and is offered every 2-3 years during a different period and often with an art-focus).

AIG Life Science with Art - G4-8For students G4-8 this year, HSFM is offering Life in the Answers in Genesis series, “God’s Design for Science”. The Life science curriculum reveals the wonders of God’s creation through the study of His creation and handiwork in the intricacies of seeds, organ functions, insects, and bacteria. Including the use of art in this class we are able to bring the beauty of the Creator’s work to life in our ability to be creative.

Mrs. Diane Gnewuch completed 2 years Bio-Medical education towards a degree in Biology, an AS in Nutrition from Santiago College, and has been teaching science for homeschool students in a classroom setting since 2006. Throughout her life, she has enjoyed teaching various classes at church from preschool through adults. She has five grown children with over 24 years of homeschool experience from 1990-2014. Her knowledge of science and teaching experience have challenged and enriched HSFM students since 2011.

General Science - G6-9This course covers a wide array of scientific fields including history of science, the scientific method, archeology, astronomy, geology & paleontology, meteorology & oceanography, general chemistry, general physics, life science & general biology, marine science, environmental science, and science & creation with a Biblical perspective. Mrs. Gnewuch presents an overview of each module and conducts interactive class discussions for greater understanding and appreciation of each concept. Lab experiments help students connect with module topics in a direct, hands-on way. The format provides easy-to-follow instructions on how to understand scientific principles, read graphs, and complete written lab reports. Critical thinking is encouraged as students explore topics utilizing the scientific method to conduct experiments. The first two module tests are open book, giving students the opportunity to become familiar with the test procedure and learn how to study for future tests. Earlier modules also have highlighted text to show students where to find details for lab reports and assignments. The student notebook is designed to work harmoniously with the textbook and class participation. Students gain confidence with the material while appreciating the world around them from a scientific perspective. This is an engaging junior-high level course that will equip students with a solid foundation for future science courses. Physical Science - G7-9This course thoroughly covers physical science topics and lays a valuable foundation for both Jr. high students and G9 students taking this course for high school credit. Mrs. Gnewuch presents a power point presentation with explanations of topics covered in each module. Interactive experiments will help students understand and appreciate the concepts covered in the book, including motion, energy, waves, sound, the structure of atoms, chemical bonds and reactions, the Earth’s structure, and much more. Activities and lab experiments are selected from the curriculum. Students will be expected to complete approximately one module every two weeks. With the use of the Apologia Physical Science Student Notebook, students will complete class labs using the scientific process and standard lab reporting format. While this course is recommended by the publisher for 8th grade students after completing Apologia's General Science course, HSFM offers it as a 6th-9th grade course and suggests that younger students may need additional help at home. Prior experience using the scientific method, conducting experiments, and completing lab reports is helpful. Mrs. Lesie Blankshain love for children has been life-long, always wanting to follow in her mother's footsteps as a full-time mother. As a child she aspired to be a teacher, but instead obtained a bachelor’s degree in nursing and worked as a registered nurse in newborn, neonatal, and pediatric intensive care units, which further grounded her desire to work with children and their families. She and her husband began home schooling in 1995, and together graduated each of their four children, completing their home school journey in 2016. HSFM played a significant role in providing educational, mentoring, and social experiences for their children, which helped them continue their educations in business, nursing, mechanical engineering, and communications. Now having completed the homeschool journey, Mrs. Blankshain (aka Lesie) enjoys teaching and developing courses that assist and encourage families to continue their unique homeschooling experience. Besides working within the homeschool community, she continues in deaf ministry with ASL interpreting at church and evangelistic outreaches, and spending time with family and grandbabies.

Biology - HSThis class will reinforce the student’s home study of Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Biology, 3rd Edition. Each module in Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Biology (3rd edition) is thoroughly explained through a visually illustrated power point presentation each week. The class notes with full color illustrations are used at home to reinforce the material presented in the curriculum. The class lecture and illustrated notes help to accelerate students’ efforts as they complete the homework assignments with greater understanding and appreciation of God’s work in creation, and with practical applications related to life science and health. The modules are paced approximately two weeks per module. Labs from the Apologia curriculum are completed in class and include the use of microscopes, experiments, and hands on dissections of various specimens (worm, crayfish, perch, frog, and additional bonus, fetal pig dissection). Students complete weekly lab sheets (included with material fee) and learn the scientific process using a standardized lab report format included with the material fee. The scope of this class, both lecture and lab, is to focus on the material within the textbook to help students gain mastery of important topics contained in a high school level biology course. Students will be checked off each week for completing study guide questions, taking module tests at home, and completing the weekly lab reports. It is recommended that, if possible, students obtain the curriculum early and begin reading the first module and answering the study guide questions before the first class.

Mrs. Christine Sheppard received her B.S. degree in marketing in 1991 from the University of Maryland and later received her M.A. in Spiritual Psychology, and PsyD in Counseling. Mrs. Sheppard did not know the Lord in her youth, but accepted Jesus in her late twenties. Since that time, she has been grateful for opportunities to grow in God’s grace along with her husband, and to be homeschooling their son so he too can become grounded in God’s Word and his faith in Jesus. She currently serves as a group leader for CCPSP and spends time as a team leader for youth camps through Calvary Baptist, our host church. Since 1995 she has worked as a business and training consultant. She enjoys working with adults and teens and has coached both ages in triathlon and endurance sports, having completed multiple triathlons, including iron distance races. During her time as an HSFM mother, she has been a class helper for various classes, experienced the different teaching styles on campus, and is welcoming the opportunity to teach our high school students this year.

Chemistry - HSThis class will reinforce the student’s home study of Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 3rd Edition. Students will be expected to complete approximately one module every two weeks so that class time will be spent reviewing and reinforcing the main concepts of the module through a power point presentation. Printed lecture notes are provided with the material feel for student note taking and review at home. The instructor will select and provide essential lab experiments from the text and other resources. The scope of this class will be limited to the material contained in the text in order that maximum thoroughness and comprehension of the main concepts will be mastered week by week. Instruction for the math components will be provided as needed. Further explanation and guidance with any homework will also be provided in class and via email. To help students stay on schedule with the curriculum, assignments will be checked off each week. Students will be expected to complete the “On Your Own Questions”, and take the module tests at home. Prerequisite is Algebra 1.

Mrs. Amber Godwin completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from Vanguard University in 2012 after having been home-schooled K-12. She is also known by her maiden name, Miss Kearon, and as an HSFM instructor, PE and running coach for several years. As a mother of four, she welcomes the opportunity to teach home-school students again in a classroom setting. In addition to her interest in science and athletics, she has always enjoyed the writing process and effectively taught the WriteShop classes at HSFM. Amber and her husband Caleb served in college ministry for several years, where she taught Bible studies for young women, and engaged them in discussions on topics that advance the Christian worldview. Mrs. Godwin's personal and academic experiences are sure to encourage home school students as they study anatomy this year. In addition to caring for her growing family, she enjoys hiking, backpacking, long distance running, home improvement, crafting, and reading.

Anatomy - HSThis advanced biology course, using Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology: The Human Body, will cover in detail the anatomy and physiology of the human body’s eleven organ systems. Through microscopic study of human tissue and dissection of mammalian organs and animals, students will witness the magnificent design of these systems. Reinforcement of the anatomy will be accomplished through coloring exercises from the companion Anatomy Coloring Book. Students will be amazed as they discover the ways each of those systems not only accomplishes its unique tasks, but seamlessly interacts with the other systems of the body. Our bodies are truly a marvel of engineering and design. Students who completed Apologia’s Biology course (or any other biology text) will find this thorough study of the human body to be a valuable complement to previously acquired knowledge. Anatomy is also a useful course as a 3rd year lab science class for college prep transcripts and is academically valuable for students considering any of the various health science majors in college, including nursing. Prerequisites: High School Biology required. Chemistry suggested, but not required.

Mr. Ken Blankshain received his degree from UC Irvine in 1983 and spent 13 years working in the defense industry designing and developing military applications of GPS including navigation and missile tracking systems for defense programs. In 1997, he cofounded TelTron Telemetry Systems Corporation designing and manufacturing missile tracking telemetry systems for the government and organizations in the missile defense community, as well as data systems to military and weather satellite programs. As a home school father of four, he has shared in the teaching of technical subjects through high school. Having used and embraced the Apologia Physics curriculum, he will utilize the curriculum to help students understand concepts and problems while at the same time instill a fascination for physical science and physics applications.

Physics - HSThis class will reinforce the student’s home study of Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Physics curriculum. Students will complete approximately one module every two weeks so that class time will be spent reviewing and reinforcing the main concepts included in the text. The scope of this class will focus on the textbook material for students to thoroughly comprehend and apply the concepts to physics problems related to matter and energy (motion in one & two dimensions, free fall, vectors, Newton's Laws, circular motion & gravity, work & energy, momentum, periodic motion, waves, geometric optics, Coulomb's Law & electric field, electric potential & circuits, and magnetism). The teacher will present and explain each concept in class and work problems from the homework, which includes the “on your own problems”, the review questions, and the practice problems. To help students stay on schedule, assignments will be recorded each week. The Apologia tests are administered and corrected at home with the accompanying solutions manual and brought to class for verification and review as needed. Pre-requisites include algebra 1 & geometry. Concurrent study of algebra 2 or pre-calculus is beneficial. The basic fundamentals of trigonometry are used throughout the course, but for students who have not yet covered trigonometry in pre-calculus, an overview of essential trigonometric math concepts (sine, cosine, and tangent) will be provided by the instructor.
