Mr. Daniel Carter began learning sign language in high school with a deaf teacher and the Lord used her to influence him to develop a love for deaf culture and the community as a whole. Prior to graduating from high school, he was trained to interpret at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa during the 1990’s. Following high school, he attended Golden West College to earn an interpreting certificate and shortly thereafter began interpreting within the Community College district. For the next 6 years, he pursued community interpreting throughout north and south Orange County, extending through a wide range of university course interpreting (amongst many Cal State Universities and local community colleges), medical interpreting, and evangelistic and various religious interpreting events. Meanwhile, having a heart for missions, he took foreign mission trips to Hungary and Ukraine through Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, and meeting deaf in many remote places that the Lord would lead him. In 2003, he moved to Ukraine as a full time missionary, planting and pastoring churches. Over the last 21 years, the Lord has blessed him with his wife, Janette and three beautiful children. He and his wife home-schooled and served in Ukraine for 20 of those years to both the hearing and the deaf while learning Ukrainian/Russian and Ukrainian Sign Language. In Sept of 2022, he and his family evacuated their home and ministry in the Ukraine and returned to Southern California because of the civil unrest and war. Since then, Mr. Carter has returned to community interpreting in Orange County working through Goodwill industries as a freelance interpreter. He looks forward to imparting the love and joy of deaf culture and sign language to all students desiring to learn. Apart from signing, he is also a very gifted violinist and painter. He believes God has amazing plans for each of his children, and sees how classes can equip Christians for future ministry as well as prepare and equip them for their future livelihood. Because he has experienced God’s awesome blessings and provisions throughout his life, he knows the Lord today is preparing students in the homeschooling community to also develop skills to be used for His glory and purposes.

American Sign Language G1-6Sign Language G1-6 ~ HSFM students now have the opportunity to begin learning sign language before studying it as a high school foreign language. Children of all ages and adults too can benefit from learning an articulated language such as ASL (American Sign Language). Learning vocabulary and how to dialogue with others is not only fun, but can be cognitively stimulating for creative and abstract thinking, memory, spatial awareness, and even improve a child’s spelling over time. As children practice sign language, they become better communicators, and overall, more observant. They learn to pay attention not only to words, but also to body language and non-verbal facial and tactical expressions that are naturally a part of the ASL language. At some point, students who learn sign language will encounter individuals with varying degrees of hearing loss. Beginning any foreign language at an early age lays a foundation to build upon through life. Teachers, policemen, health providers, and anyone working in public service have used very basic understanding of ASL to connect and help others. In church ministry, those who care for the deaf can grow in their skills and be part of a deaf community, helping them to worship and understand the teaching of God’s Word. Children taking HSFM’s G1-6 ASL class will grow in many ways this year. Not only will they learn vocabulary for everyday conversations, they will also learn basic sentence structure unique for ASL, describing, asking questions, tenses, and adding emphasis. This class will include more than learning the mechanics of a foreign language as Mr. Carter makes learning come to life with his extensive experience within the deaf community and the skills he has acquired over the years. While the class is labeled as G1-6, parents and students of all ages are welcome.
