Mrs. Jobanna Lee has been a believer since her young adult years, and continues to love and serve the Lord Jesus through family, church ministry, and participating in various roles with HSFM since 2014. She was born and raised in South America with Spanish as her native language, and came to southern CA when she was fifteen. She began college as an art and advertising design major, married her husband Caleb in 1995, became a fulltime mother to four wonderful children, and began her homeschool journey in 2004. During her time with HSFM, she has been an instructional aide for Spanish classes, a parent helper for many other classes, and has filled multiple facility roles. She has been a multilevel teacher and aid for Sunday School and Awanas. Two of their children are grown, one pursuing a career in the Navy as a Fire controlman, the other as a music technology major. Her remaining two children continue at HSFM, where Mrs. Lee and her husband embrace HSFM’s Christ-centered vision. She appreciates all opportunities to serve the Lord and desires to help other families succeed in homeschooling their children for God’s glory. Her hobbies include art, music, reading the Bible, and walking her “fur baby” while enjoying God’s beautiful outdoor creation.

Elementary Spanish G1-3Children will be introduced to the Spanish language as Mrs. Lee engages them in various activities. They will be introduced to various sets of vocabulary words and simple conversational sentences such as: What is your name? How are you? They will learn how to use articles, pronouns, the gender of pronouns, plural nouns, prepositions, rhyming words, numbers 1-20 (ordinal/cardinal), colors, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, weather, family tree, etc. This introduction to the Spanish language will include reading aloud with stories & poems, games, manipulatives, and crafts to reinforce the learning experience.

Elementary Spanish G4-8Based on the grade levels and/or previous language exposure of the students enrolled, class time will be divided between 2 levels in order for both groups to rotate through an instructional teaching time, and an interactive practice lab time.
This course is designed to be an enjoyable and student friendly experience for elementary and junior high students to begin learning Spanish before high school, and can be taken twice for additional practice, reinforcement, and retention. Students will enjoy learning vocabulary and phrases for conversational Spanish, and also learn foundational grammar concepts that they will later build upon at the high school level. Each week an overview of the topics covered in the curriculum will be covered in an engaging and age-appropriate manner. Class time includes interactive activities and games as students practice pronunciation of vocabulary, conversational phrases, matching pronouns with proper verb conjugations, and basic sentence structure. Using "Mi Camino Spanish" curriculum students gain an introduction to the Spanish language with eighteen colorfully illustrated lessons and worksheets. Topics include 1) Greetings & Goodbyes & Introduction to "SER" 2) Numbers, Alphabet, Colors & Shapes 3) The Calendar & Weather Basics 4) Telling Time & School Vocabulary 5) Common Verbs & "Me Gusta" 6) The Body, "Me Duele," & Animals 7) Asking Questions, Adjectives & My Family 8) Food & the Present Tense 9) Introduction to the Simple Future 10) Introduction to Spanish-Speaking Countries 11) Introduction to "TENER" & Possessive Adjectives 12) Diving into "SER" 13) Introduction to "HACER" & Animals of the Rainforest 14) I am "ESTAR" & Introduction to the Present Progressive 15) Introduction to "PODER" & Understanding "GUSTAR" 16) Introduction to Prepositions of Place & Clothing 17) Introduction to Affirmative Tú Commands & Reflexive Verbs 18) Putting it All Together. Spanish 1 - HSThis High School Spanish 1 course supports a full year of Spanish instruction using the "Spanish is Fun" curriculum (included with material fee) which is designed to help students attain a desired first-year level of proficiency in four basic skills ~ speaking, listening, reading, and writing. "Beginning Spanish is introduced through a gradual presentation of grammatical structures. Personalized exercises, games, and activities provide practice for application of the vocab and concepts learned." The text uses lively illustrations to introduce vocabulary and fun narratives to reinforce vocabulary and grammatical structures. Chapter summaries include illustrated conversations and personalized dialogue activities. The text also integrates cultural sections to acquaint students to life in the Spanish-speaking world. Review units provide additional practice. Students will learn Spanish at the high school level with vocabulary, grammar, verb conjugations for regular and boot verbs in the present, immediate future, and preterit (introduced in final chapter). Conjugations and usage of widely used irregular verbs such as ser, estar, ir, tener, hacer, gustar, and others are also practiced throughout with conversational applications. Grammar concepts include plurality, articles, adjectives, possessive and demonstrative adjectives, and prepositions. Immediate future and Preterit will be covered in the last lesson. Students will enjoy interactive and hands-on class activities with creative manipulatives, which may include I have, who has games', board games, and others that provide opportunities to interact and practice pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversations. YouTube videos and Quizlet vocabulary assignments may be included for additional pronunciation practice at home and for reinforcement of concepts covered in the weekly lessons. Additional drill and practice worksheets or activities may be provided for to supplement the curriculum. As the adage reminds us, “practice makes perfect”, and students who faithfully apply themselves to the Spanish lessons each day, will begin to enjoy the process of learning a foreign language as applicable as Spanish.

Mrs. Cledy Bias came to Christ at a young age and as a homeschool mom feels called to raise her three children to be led by the Lord in all that they do. As a pediatric registered nurse for over 16 yrs., she worked with Spanish speaking children and parents. There she was given the opportunity to interpret for them to the doctors and nurses concerning their care. Mrs. Bias lived in Peru for 21 years. She helped with the Spanish classes at HSFM in previous years, but now she will use her love for the Spanish language and encourage homeschool children in the Lord while teaching Spanish.

Spanish 2 - HSThis High School Spanish 2 course supports a full year of instruction using the "Spanish is Fun" curriculum. It is designed to help students obtain a second-year proficiency in four basic skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Mrs. Lee's fluency in the language and teaching experience, enables her to teach challenging concepts clearly and thoroughly and at the same time engage the students through an enjoyable and interactive approach. Learning a foreign language can be challenging for many students, and Mrs. Lee’s experience working with students of all ages and abilities makes class time productive and positive for students. The text uses lively illustrations to introduce vocabulary and fun narratives to reinforce vocabulary and grammatical structures. Chapter summaries include illustrated conversations and personalized dialogue activities. The text also integrates cultural sections to expose students to life in the Spanish-speaking world. The Cuaderno / Notebook that comes with the curriculum provides additional practice for students at home. Spanish 2 will provide reinforcement of concepts previously learned in Spanish 1 (see Spanish 1 course description), and cover topics such as stem-changing verbs (verbs with spelling changes), negatives, affirmatives expressions, formal, informal commands, adjectives, adverbs, reflexive verbs, preterit, imperfect tenses, demonstrative adjectives, pronouns, direct, indirect, double object pronouns, comparisons, future tense of regular & irregular verbs, conditional tenses, past participles, present perfect tenses, and present subjunctive. Weekly quizzes, verb conjugation drills and practice worksheets may be provided to further complement the course as needed. Students will enjoy hands-on and interactive class activities which may include: 'I have, who has’ games, board games with dice, matching game boards, Bingo, Spanish Jeopardy amongst many others that provide opportunities to interact, practice pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversations with other students. YouTube videos and Quizlet vocabulary assignments are given for additional pronunciation practice at home and to reinforce concepts covered in the weekly lessons. Students who may have struggled in Spanish 1 may gain confidence in Spanish 2 as the language becomes more familiar, and concepts are reviewed. Mrs. Lesie Blankshain's love for children has been life-long, always wanting to follow in her mother's footsteps as a full-time mother. As a child she aspired to be a teacher, but instead obtained a bachelor’s degree in nursing and worked as a registered nurse in newborn, neonatal, and pediatric intensive care units, which further grounded her desire to work with children and their families. She and her husband began home schooling in 1995, and together graduated each of their four children, completing their home school journey in 2016. HSFM played a significant role in providing educational, mentoring, and social experiences for their children, which helped them continue their educations in business, nursing, mechanical engineering, and communications. Now having completed the homeschool journey, Mrs. Blankshain (aka Lesie) enjoys teaching and developing courses that assist and encourage families to continue their unique homeschooling experience. Besides working within the homeschool community, she continues in deaf ministry with ASL interpreting at church and evangelistic outreaches, and spending time with family and grandbabies.

American Sign Language - Level 1 & 2American Sign Language (ASL), is an articulated language using hand gestures as well as a combination of facial expressions and body movements. Level 1 students will build an extensive foundation of sign language beginner vocabulary, and practice the grammar & sentence structure unique to ASL. Level 2 Students will learn, refresh, expand, and further practice vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures unique to ASL. They will continue to discover ASL as a visual language, grow in understanding and use of proper ASL grammar and begin to explore the art of storytelling in ASL. Students will further learn to think and express ideas using ASL and will be able to work on advancing their fluidity of the language while mastering the language’s broad vocabulary, idioms, and grammar rules. Class time will include activities that provide practical conversational dialogue that is based on the grammatical concepts presented in each of the lessons in the text, along with ASL centered games. Students will learn to think and express ideas using ASL's grammar and syntax. As with spoken languages, the parts of speech and sentence structure for ASL are defined and students will grow in their understanding and use of grammar, such as personal pronouns, predicate adjectives, possessives, identifying nouns, verbs, negatives, past, present, future tense, imperatives, multiple pronouns & plurals, questions, noun-verb pairs, adverbs, demonstratives, conjunctions, and grammatical applications unique to ASL, including mass quantifies, using modals/helping verbs objects and directional verbs, tense indicators, time duplication & repetition, clauses, comparison sentences, and verb inflections. Class time will also include Deaf culture awareness, brief lectures, readings, and class discussions. Students who are genuinely interested in the deaf culture and deaf ministry will enjoy learning ASL for future ministry or career opportunities. Religious vocabulary and expressions will also be incorporated through worship songs and Bible verses. While many colleges accept American Sign Language (ASL) on high school transcripts, families are encouraged to research the foreign language requirements for the colleges of their choice.
