Mrs. Mary Roberts received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Education from Gonzaga University in Washington state. She taught third and fifth grade for eighteen years, and served as an elementary and middle school vice-principal, principal, and high school assistant principal for fourteen years. As an administrator, her chief tasks were managing, evaluating, and mentoring teachers, scheduling teachers and students, and selecting and coordinating curriculum from kindergarten through high school. Mrs. Julie Kotoff, the creator, developer, and previous HSFM Mad Dog Math teacher, selected Mrs. Roberts to assume her role at HSFM beginning this past 2020-21 school year. The two have been best friends since they taught together many years ago. Before teaching Math Facts at HSFM, Mrs. Roberts was using Mad Dog Math in tutoring students one on one. She believes Mad Dog Math is one of the best tools for developing a strong math foundation for students of all ages. She loves the Lord, loves kids, and is a very seasoned classroom teacher who enjoys using MDM with HSFM students to help them love and master their math facts.

Mad Dog Math Facts Mastery - G1-6The foundation for strong math literacy is math facts mastery. It is the gateway to fractions, which in turn, is the gateway to algebra. Students who master their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts are better equipped to tackle higher-level math problems later on. The Mad Dog Math (MDM) System will help students learn tricks and techniques to make acquiring math facts simpler and easier. The MDM System, along with Marcy Cook Tile Cards and various math games, will be utilized in the classroom at three separate stations. Students will have access to the online MDM game, which is the backbone of the class. Ten minutes per day at home is recommended to reinforce the facts. Tricks and individual fact families (one per week) will be taught at the Teacher Station. Exciting math games to reinforce concepts will be played at the Math Games Station. Analytical skills will be challenged at the Tile Station. This multi-level class will also be divided into groups according to grade level or ability. Grades 1-2 will focus on addition and subtraction facts, while grades 3-6 will concentrate on multiplication and division facts. All students will move through the 3 stations each week to master facts at their own pace. Parent helpers will assist in overseeing two individual stations throughout the year. With hard work, deliberate intention, and repetition, students will gain confidence as each new fact family is mastered. If your child finds math frightening, laborious, or discouraging, then this is the class for him or her. If your child needs help in acquiring math facts, or moving from accuracy to automaticity (fast, accurate recall with very little thought), then this class will be very helpful. Teaching videos are available on the MDM website (MadDogMath.com) to help parents understand the program and reinforce the math tricks at home. This class makes learning math facts fun!

Middle Math Concepts - Level 1 & 2 - G4-7Students who have mastered basic math facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including Mad Dog Math graduates, have the opportunity to continue learning and building math skills with Middle Math Concepts (MMC). The course is designed to cover G4-7 math standards, but is also appropriate for G7-8 students who can benefit from additional review and practice with fractions, decimals, negative & positive numbers, and more. Students will be placed into groups by ability and grade level. Each group level will rotate from a lecture area to a lab area, mastering a number of concepts at their own pace. Topics covered include: Pre-algebra elements with positive & negative integers, exponents, order of operations, perimeter, area, divisibility rules, prime/composite numbers & factoring, and working with fractions and mixed numbers. Students rotate through a teaching station where new concepts are introduced, a games station where students enjoy math games, and a homework station where students begin their homework with assistance as needed. Tasks are presented with varying degrees of difficulty, ranging from students brand new to concepts, to more challenging levels for math mastery. Tips, shortcuts, and problem-solving strategies are provided. Middle Math Concepts is a valuable supplement to any G4-7 math curriculum used at home and will help prepare students for Pre-algebra. As such, this class can be repeated until mastery and understanding of each concept is acquired. Students will receive weekly activity pages for continued practice at home as a supplement to their daily grade level math curriculum.

Mrs. Esther Urbina was a 2016 homeschool graduate, having taken HSFM classes K-12! She completed her associates degree in communications because of her desire to work with people and become a high school math teacher. During high school, math became her favorite subject, and she was able to appreciate firsthand the benefit of taking HSFM math classes while using Teaching Textbooks at home. During and after high school, she was given mentoring and small group leadership opportunities with younger girls, and leading worship for the high school group. She enjoys relating to children of all ages, having assisted in Awana’s program, providing childcare for young children, and now enjoying nieces and nephews. In college, she served on the Sunday evening ministry team. She is married to her husband, Sterling, and has worked in customer service for the City of Huntington beach and in the dental industry. When recently asked her favorite work experience, she replied that it was teaching algebra to home school students at HSFM. In her commute and spare time, she enjoys listening to Bible studies by her favorite pastors.

Mrs. Martina Rains
Mrs. Martina Rains is a lifelong learner whose interest in conservative investing was first sparked while taking a course in economics. Attending a Dave Ramsey series at church over 20 years ago also inspired her to think Biblically about personal finance and stewardship. She received her BA from UCI in Psychology and Social Behavior and her Masters in Clinical Psychology from the Doctoral program at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. In 1998 she incorporated and maintained a mortgage company, and married in 2007. She and her husband Michael were blessed with 2 daughters and they have been homeschooling since the beginning. As a homeschooling mother, she currently manages her and her husband’s real estate and property management business; and they are both active in church ministry and leadership. Mrs. Rains is passionate about helping others understand financial literacy based on Biblical principles. She first dedicated her life to Christ after realizing that worldly success is empty, and has since allowed His Word to be the foundation and truth upon which everything in life rests. She is excited to bring together her faith, research background, and business experience to homeschool students so they can begin to apply practical steps needed to make wise financial decisions in everyday life.

Dave Ramsey Personal Finance - G8-12This very practical course on personal finance draws from God’s Word which address the topic of money over 2000 times, and from Dave Ramsey’s Foundations in Personal Finance curriculum based on his Complete Guide to Money and Financial Peace University. From Foundations: “Your students will not only learn about personal finance, but they’ll also learn how to put that knowledge into action now and in the future. Your students will be challenged to think differently about money – that debt isn’t good, and looking successful isn’t the same as being successful. Helping your students achieve that mindset shift is the first step in showing them how to win with money.”
The Foundations topics include: Introduction to Personal Finance, Budgeting, Saving Money, Understanding Credit and Debt, Consumer Awareness, Career Readiness, College Planning, Financial Services, The Role of Insurance, Income and Taxes, Housing and Real Estate, Investing and Retirement, and Global Economics. Each Chapter has four to six lessons with video instruction ranging from 8-13 minutes, activities, guided notes, and analyze and reflect questions. There will be lively guided discussions, critical thinking prompts, and the text also includes opportunity for journaling and reflection. The Dave Ramsey Classroom curriculum includes access to an online textbook, video and activities that can be completed online. This course will also aim to: help students grow a deeper understanding of God’s perspective on money and stewardship; build a solid Biblical foundation the student will be able to apply to his/her life and personal finances; encourage the student to develop Christ-like character in their handling of His resources; and develop clarity regarding financial choices and the potential results through critical thinking and discussion.
