Mrs. Julie Corrigan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Parks and Natural Resources Management with an emphasis in Design from Cal State University, Chico. She worked as a Recreation Supervisor in Northern California, along with teaching various art and outdoor education classes, before becoming employed at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, where she has worked from 1990-2023. Her experience at CCCM included implementation coordinator, data administration, publishing, accounting, graphics, transcriptions, and IT technician. She and her husband homeschooled their four children, and she has taught a variety of classes over the past 45 years, to both children and adults, including Art, Outdoor Education, Orienteering & Mapping, Math, Science and Geography just to name a few. She is also part of HSFM's Administration team and Bookkeeper. She spends her spare time with family, helping other ministries and businesses, running a small business of homeschool resources and textiles, gardening, enjoying God's Word and relaxing at home in Lake Elsinore.

Little Explorers - 3-5 YrsHere is where Little Explorers, who are beginning their adventure in the world of learning, will discover all the subjects of the 3R's (reading, writing and arithmetic), along with art/colours & shapes, science/health, geography and Bible. All of these subjects will be explored throughout the year as the Little Explorers navigate the globe and experience all sorts of fun adventures. The class will be structured in such a way that many concepts will be repeated and reviewed again while motor skills are being developed. We know repetition makes for good recollection. There will be a time of study, art and story time all woven together around the theme of Sea Life. Here we make the first steps of learning FUN!

Ms. Jana Corrigan received her associate degree in Art and Humanities from Coast Community College in 2020 as well as private art instruction for a number of years. As a graduated homeschool student, she has a passion for teaching art alongside academic subjects such as science and history in the homeschool community where her students and families have appreciated her artistic skills and her ability to encourage and instruct students of all ages in art theory. Besides teaching for HSFM, she is an author/illustrator and runs her own art business. We are very grateful that the Lord has provided a teacher who not only has years of private training and college coursework, but also is knowledgeable and experienced in providing instruction in art theory while incorporating science and history lessons.

Art w/Science - G1-3Students have the opportunity to combine Art with Science as a multi-sensory approach to learning science and as a means for integrating school work while enjoying art. Students can also take this class as an Art-only elective. The art projects completed in class will reflect and enrich the weekly science lessons. Young artists will enjoy a variety of art mediums which may include colored pencil, watercolor crayons, and oil pastels. The weekly science homework will include reading assignments from G1-3 Master Books Heaven & Earth. Learning and enjoying art throughout childhood can help improve motor skills and visual learning, and can also benefit children in their overall academic performance and innovation. Parents and children are pleasantly surprised to see what little hands can produce with encouragement and instruction. The Art w/Science courses can be repeated multiple years as various science texts and art lessons rotate from year to year.

Art Around the World - G4-8In this class, we are going to unfold the art and culture of people from around the globe. Students will begin with the Americas and journey through the continents, focusing weekly on different countries and their cultural art. Students can take this class as an Art-only elective. The art projects completed in class will reflect the country of the week. Students will be given a syllabus with weekly handouts and various art history worksheets that explain and illustrate the country, art culture, and subsequent art project. Projects will be completed in various mediums such as graphite, watercolor, ink, and mixed media.Students will be provided with weekly handouts that include information on the country, local art, and artistic technique. The class consists of 26 lessons and art projects that include an overview of events, famous people and art. The art assignment will be completed in class and will correspond to the country that we will be studying. Each student’s art ability will be taken into consideration, and art assignments will be offered according to their skill level.

Art - Drawing or Watercolor - G6-12These two courses prepare high school students for a college art-related course, and are adaptable for 6th - 8th grade students who are interested in developing their artistic talents. Students will practice a variety of different art techniques designed to build a strong artistic foundation in art theory, art appreciation, and how to apply the fundamental elements of art through in class projects and weekly handouts. No prior art experience is required for Drawing. While Watercolor is designed for both beginner and intermediate artists, prior art exposure or a drawing class is required for students who want to take Watercolor, which applies color theory to elements previously taught in Drawing. Note that both classes can be repeated multiple times. Course work and projects will be adjusted for returning students according to their artistic skills.
Drawing Students will learn the elements of art such as form, line, shape, space, and texture. Other principles such as proportion, depth, perspective, and composition will also be studied. Lessons will provide the basis for art theory and drawing technique presented in the form of weekly handouts. Class instruction will guide students in applying these new skills for specific drawing projects. Students will use a range of drawing mediums including pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, and pastels in their projects. Watercolor Students will learn the fundamentals of color theory through watercolor techniques and will apply art elements and principles such as color, hue, tinting, value, balance, rhythm, and emphasis. Watercolor and its many applications will be studied through classical and contemporary examples. Art appreciation and technique practices presented in the form of weekly handouts provide the opportunity for students to evaluate works of the masters and then apply specific techniques to their projects incorporating color theory. Students will be encouraged to grow their unique artistic voice with each project. Projects will mainly be completed in watercolor with the occasional use of colored pencils and ink pens. Charlotte Laurain is a worship club leader for all ages. Since 2022, she has taught the students at HSFM the love of music and how it can be used in their lives in every aspect! Prior to HSFM, she taught music at Path Christian Academy, Cypress for 8 years and Bethany Christian in Westminster. She has been involved in guitar and keyboard music for over 30 years and enjoys sharing what she has learned with eager, young minds. She has a music minor degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, June 1991.

Guitar - G6-12GUITAR : Students will be introduced to basic chords, strumming, and rhythm patterns to establish a foundation for playing songs. Music theory will also be taught to help students understand chords and chord progressions within various keys. Students will need to practice at home in order to gain the most from this course and to experience the many rewards of playing music that can be personally enjoyed and shared with others in ministry. Individual strengths and weaknesses will be considered to help students succeed at their level.
Instruction for intermediate students who have taken the class or have had other previous guitar instruction may repeat the class for further mastery and confidence. Ms. Emma Helms is a recent graduate from Cypress College. She has earned an AA in Photography as well as Liberal Arts. She has received several awards for her photography while in school. She started her learning of photography in high school and has focused on this the past 6 1/2 years. Emma also is very involved in her church. She helps with VBS/talent camp , doing childcare as well as being on the Social Media Team doing photography with her young adults group. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends and drinking Boba.

Digital Photography - G6-12In this class you will learn the fundamentals of digital photography! Learn how light makes a photograph, how to compose a photo, how all of the different buttons and settings affect the photograph, and more!

Mrs. Valerie Helms is a seasoned homeschool mom and teacher. Her journey with the Lord began at age 5 and was developed more fully with monthly trips to an orphanage in Mexico. In 1985, she earned a certificate from Cerritos College in Early Childhood Education. She has spent the last 30 years as a Sunday School teacher and the last 16 years teaching co-op classes for most grade levels and nearly every subject. She has a wonderful supportive husband who has helped facilitate their homeschool journey. They have hosted students from 4 countries for 12 years, as well as homeschooled their own two children that are now in college. She recalls one of her experiences in their journey where they constructed chicken coups when studying life cycles. At one point, they had 32 animals. Mrs. Helms is in leadership at a local Christian academy and thoroughly enjoys mentoring mothers and nurturing children. She loves the homeschool journey.

Mrs. Christine Sheppard received her B.S. degree in marketing in 1991 from the University of Maryland and later received her M.A. in Spiritual Psychology, and PsyD in Counseling. Mrs. Sheppard did not know the Lord in her youth, but accepted Jesus in her late twenties. Since that time, she has been grateful for opportunities to grow in God’s grace along with her husband, and to be homeschooling their son so he too can become grounded in God’s Word and his faith in Jesus. She currently serves as a group leader for CCPSP and spends time as a team leader for youth camps through Calvary Baptist, our host church. Since 1995 she has worked as a business and training consultant. She enjoys working with adults and teens and has coached both ages in triathlon and endurance sports, having completed multiple triathlons, including iron distance races. During her time as an HSFM mother, she has been a class helper for various classes, experienced the different teaching styles on campus, and is welcoming the opportunity to teach our high school students this year.

Speech - Classic Logic & Rhetoric - G8-12The ability to think clearly and communicate effectively is a skill every successful student needs to master both in school and professional settings. The study of logic helps us to know truth and understand the world around us. The study of rhetoric helps us to persuade others in both written and oral communication. Logic helps us to think clearly, while rhetoric helps us to speak clearly. In this course, students will learn how to make truthful, sound, valid arguments and how to use the rules of rhetoric to communicate those arguments persuasively. We will study various speeches to see why they were effective or not so effective. Students will also practice writing and presenting speeches to help improve their persuasiveness and ability to speak in public. This course will help students gain a skill set that can be used throughout their high school and college classes as well as their personal and professional lives.
